You cannot extend the distance of your Fire Wire Device more than 14.5 Feet without using an "Active" Extension Cable. Fire Wire Active Extension Cables can be chained together to extend the distance of your Fire Wire Device (DV Camera, Hard Drive, iPod, Digital Camera, etc.) from your computer. The maximum length you can achieve using the Fire Wire Extension Cables reliably is 60 Feet. The cable works like any other Extension Cable simply by plugging the cable into the Fire Wire Port on your computer or hub and plug the device into the other end.
